Be a Jeerleader in 2010! Tryouts date scheduled... Sign up now!

Do you love to dance? Do you love to cheer and have a load of fun? Do you love roller derby and want to be more involved in GGRD action? Then we're looking for you! Keep reading...

We are are on the hunt for ladies of all shapes and sizes, age 21 or older, who have some form of coordination, love to dance, and who are passionate about roller derby. Previous cheer and dance experience is preferred, but certainly not required. Duties as a Jeerleader will generally include performing at 4-6 bouts a season, purchasing your own uniform and equipment, participating in our fundraising events, and being involved with your individual squad by helping to make signs and other projects to help motivate the crowd and your team. We also try to travel to GGRD away games when possible. Being a Jeerleader is an awesome and fun way to show your love for the Gotham Girls Roller Derby!

Tryouts for 2010 GGRD Jeerleaders will be held on Monday, December 14. See below for information. If you have further questions, check out the FAQ page on the jeerleader website (http://www.ggrdjeerleaders.com) or email head jeerleader, Lolita Ford (contact information also available on the jeerleader website). Lolita will be happy to sign you up for tryouts and to answer any other questions you might have about being a jeerleader. Please join us!

Tryouts will be held on one day only. Monday, December 14th 2009.

440 Studios (Studio 3A)
440 Lafayette Street
New York, New York 10003

Tryouts will begin promptly at 7:00 PM and will end by no later then 9:00PM

Recruits will be taught part of a simple jeerleader dance routine in a group setting which they will then perform together as a group in front the Jeerleader squad captains and co-captains. There will be no singling people out and no cartwheels, flips, stunts, or other crazy stuff....just dancing. We suggest wearing comfortable attire and bringing a bottle of water.

There will be a small fee ($5-10) to cover the cost of the studio. Exact cost will depend on the number of ladies trying out. We hope to see you there! Sign up now!

Jeerleader shout out in Tom Tom Magazine

Check it out, we really DO throw awesome fundraiser parties! See, for proof, this recent interview in Tom Tom Magazine with Emily Rems, the drummer for Royal Pink, who played at our Girls Rock! fundraiser this past summer. And then stay tuned here for info on our next party so you don't miss out on the fun.

Here's the snippit:
TTM: Most notable show you ever played?
ER: We’ve played a few that were real whoppers. The one that really sticks out in my head was really recently we played a benefit for the Gotham Girls Roller Derby Jeerleaders.  The roller derby has cheerleaders who cheer for each team called Jeerleaders. We played this gig with lots of punk-ass roller derby people there. The place was packed. And there were actual cheerleaders with pom poms dancing along with their pompoms to every song and they were like ripping their clothes off and throwing bras at us and screaming. And it was like “Yeah! We’re rock stars!” in this real girl power kind of way. You’ve never played drums until you’ve seen cheerleaders pom-poming it to your beat.

Full interview can be found here: http://tomtommag.com/blog/?p=1918

Thanks Emily!

We bet they can! We also bet there will be a lot of awesome derby to be seen. GGRD's first bout of the tournament is on Friday, November 13.

Post-Season Showdown!

The October 24th post-season showdown at Hunter College will feature separate tests for the Queens of Pain and Brooklyn Bombshells against the Sockit Wenches of the Rat City Rollergirls (Seattle, Washington).

The Sockit Wenches are tough, rock 'em sock 'em roller derby gals who have come together to steal hearts, burn rubber and leave other teams in the dust. Don't miss this East-West showdown in the final 2009 appearance for Queens and Brooklyn.

As always, tickets available at http://www.ggrdtix.com

So you wannabe a Jeerleader?

There is lots of buzz surrounding derby right now! Which means a lot of new (and old) faces are eager to get involved in this awesome sport. A great way to be involved with roller derby is by being a Jeerleader! And the Backseat Betties, Bomb Squad, Jailhouse Rockettes, and Royal Pains are always on the hunt for new ladies to join their squads.

We'll be holding tryouts for the 2010 GGRD Jeerleaders in mid-December (date TBA). We'll be holding these on a date after the final GGRD skater tryouts (skater tryouts are December 5!) This will give everyone who wants to be involved with GGRD a chance to participate (including those ladies who maybe didn't make the team just yet this year, but who still want to be a part of all the excitement even if on the sidelines).

But, if you already know that you would prefer to be on your feet and want to dance and cheer for your favorite NYC skaters as a Jeerleader, please shoot an email to Jeerleader Captain, Lolita Ford. We're taking names and will keep you posted on tryout dates and all the other info you'll need to know. You can find Lolita's contact info on the ggrdjeerleaders.com website under "contact us." And, if you want to know more about what it takes to be a Jeerleader before you sign up to tryout, check out the Jeerleader F.A.Q. page.

We'll see you in 2010!

THANK YOU!

A big thanks to everyone who came out to our game night fundraiser last night and helped us raise money to support the Gotham Girls and to also help fund our trip to cheer on GGRD at Nationals in Philly this November. We *heart* you all!
